Around 300 delegates from 30 countries across the 5 continents, will be participating at the World Kata Judo Championships on the 1st and 2nd of October at the University Sports Pavilion. This edition will be the 8th edition, and the second one to be hosted in Malta. In 2009, the Malta Judo Federation hosted the 1st ever World Kata Championships, where 25 countries were represented.

The Kata Championships consists of 5 Kata: The Nage No Kata and Katame No Kata introduce a series of Kodokan Judo techniques in Tachi waza (standing) and Katame Waza (grappling) respectively. They contain all the teachings of Prof Jigoro Kano, the founder of Judo. Joseph Muscat and Joseph Bonello will be representing Malta in the Katame No Kata. The Ju no Kata (forms of gentleness) is designed to teach the fundamental principles of judo, especially the principle of Ju (yielding or gentleness). The couple representing Malta in this Kata will be Ivan Esposito and Tiziana Apap.  These Kata will start at 09:00hrs on Saturday 1st October. The finals will start at 15:00hrs.

The other 2 Kata demonstrate Judo and Self-Defence. After Prof Kano created Judo and removed all the techniques that could directly damage the adversary, he decided to insert in his programme a series of techniques of Jujutsu to remind the origins of his discipline. The Kime No Kata represents the art of striking, and of winning the opponent, even if he is armed with a knife or sword. After many years, because of social changes, a new system reflecting the modern needs was required, and the Kodokan Goshin Jutsu was created, which is a very dynamic kata in comparison to Kime no kata. The Kodokan Goshin Jutsu shows the use of Judo when applied as self defence. These Kata will start at 09:30hrs on Sunday 2nd October. The finals will start at 14:00hrs.

Each Kata is evaluated by 5 judges, under the supervision of the IJF Kata Commission. Each judge will award points for each technique, and the couple with most points will win. There are 4 categories of mistakes through which the couples can lose points: Forgotten technique; big mistake, medium mistake; and small mistake.

A draw will be held on Friday at 19:00hrs to establish the groups and the order in which the couples will be performed will be decided.

An opening ceremony will be held on Saturday 14:30hrs, where a couple of Maltese young Judoka will perform the Kata. Paul Curmi dancers will perform, and Amber will sing the National Anthem to officially open the Championships.

Special thanks go to the main sponsors of the Championships: H20, Visitmalta and Sportmalta, and all the volunteers who are making this event happen.

30 pajjiż ser jiġu rrappreżentati f’Malta fil-Kampjonati Mondjali tal-Kata (Judo)

Madwar 300 delegat minn 30 pajjiż mil-5 kontinenti, ser ikunu qed jipparteċipaw fil-Kampjonati Mondjali tal-Kata fl-1 u 2 ta’ Ottubru fil-Padiljun Sportiv tal-Università. Din l-edizzjoni se tkun it-8 edizzjoni, u t-tieni waħda li ser tkun ospitata f’Malta. Fl-2009, il-Federazzjoni Maltija tal-Judoa organizzat l-ewwel Kampjonati tad-Dinja tal-Kata, fejn 25 pajjiż kienu ġew rappreżentati.

Il-Kampjonati tal-Kata jikkonsistu f’5 Kata: In-Nage no Kata u Katame no Kata jintroduċu serje ta’ tekniki tal-Judo tal-Kodokan f’ Tachi Waza (teknika ta’ bil-wieqfa) u Katame Waza (teknika ta’ mal-art) rispettivament. Dawn jikkonsistu t-tagħlim kollu tal-Prof Jigoro Kano, il-fundatur tal-Judo. Joseph Muscat u Joseph Bonello ser jirrappreżentaw lil Malta fil-Katame no Kata. Il Ju no Kata (forom ta’ ġentilezza) hija maħsuba biex tgħallem il-prinċipji fundamentali tal Judo, speċjalment il-prinċipju ta’ Ju (li ċċedi jew ġentilezza). Il-koppja li jirrappreżentaw Malta f’din il-Kata se jkunu Ivan Esposito u Tiziana Apap. Dawn Kata ser jibdew fil 09:00hrs is-Sibt, l-1 ta’ Ottubru. Il-finali se jibdew fil-15: 00hrs.

Il-2 Kata l-oħra juru l-Judo fi stil ta’ Awto-Difiża. Wara li Prof Kano kien ħalaq il-Judo u neħħa t-tekniki li setgħu jagħmlu ħsara lill-avversarju, huwa ddeċieda li jdaħħal fil-programm tiegħu serje ta’ teknika ta’ Jujutsu biex ifakkar l-oriġini tad-dixxiplina tiegħu. Il Kim no Kata tirrappreżenta l-arti ta’ kif tattakka, u tirbaħ lill-avversarju, anke jekk ikun armat b’sikkina jew xabla. Wara ħafna snin, minħabba l-bidliet soċjali, sistema ġdida li tirrifletti l-ħtiġijiet moderni kienet meħtieġa, u l-Kodokan Goshin Jutsu inħolqot. Din il-kata hija kata dinamika ħafna meta mqabbla mal-Kime no Kata. Il Kodokan Goshin Jutsu turi l-użu tal-Judo meta applikati bħala difiża. Dawn il-Kata ser jibew fid-09: 30hrs il-Ħadd 2 ta’ Ottubru. Il-finali se jibdew fis-14:00hrs.

Kull Kata hija evalwata minn 5 referees, taħt is-superviżjoni tal-Kummissjoni tal-Kata tal-Federazzjoni Internazzjonali tal-Judo. Kull referee jgħati il-punti għal kull teknika, u l-koppja li ġġib l-aktar punt tirbaħ. Hemm 4 kategoriji ta’ żbalji li permezz tagħhom il-koppji jistgħu jitilfu l-punti: teknika minsija; żball kbir, żball medju; u żball żgħir.

Il-polza ser issir il-Ġimgħa 30 ta’ Settembru fis-19:00hrs, fejn jiġu stabbiliti l-gruppi u l-ordni li fih l-koppji ser juru l-Kata tagħhom.

Iċ-ċerimonja tal-ftuħ ser ssir is-Sibt fis-14:30hrs, fejn koppja ta Judoka żgħażagħ Maltin ser iwettqu il-Kata. Żeffiena  ta’ Paul Curmi ser jiżfnu għal mużika Maltija, u Amber ser tkanta l-Innu Nazzjonali biex tiftaħ uffiċjalment il-Kampjonati.

Grazzi speċjali tmur għall-isponsors ewlenin tal-Kampjonati: H20, VisitMalta u Sportmalta, u l-voluntiera li qed jaħdmu biex dan l-avveniment iseħħ.
