Raffi holds training camp in Malta – New rules for International Judo

We’re still in the first weeks of the year, but a lot has already happened in the World of Judo, both internationally and locally.

Lamberto Raffi, an Italian athlete and coach synonymous with power, technique, and experience in the world of martial arts, held a training camp for the top Maltese Espoirs, Cadets, Junior and Senior Judoka at the Malta Judo Headquarters in Pembroke. Raffi held daily sessions for a week together with the other coaches, including the Sports Director Alex Bezzina, during which he shared his expertise in competition tactics, both in standing techniques and in groundwork techniques. Raffi was also accompanied by his two sons, William and Daniel Raffi, who are also top Judoka. Apart from winning several Judo tournaments, William has recently won the National cadet title in freestyle wrestling.  However, it was difficult for the coaches to run the training camp due to the small mat area.

In the meantime, the sports director Alex Bezzina attended a 2 day seminar in Malaga organised by the International Judo Federation and the European Judo Union which tackled mainly the new rules being enforced in Judo this year. With these new rules, the IJF is enforcing more discipline amongst the Judoka, trying to give the contest more fluidity and defining better the criteria for Ippon (full score) and Shidos (penalties). Alex Bezzina gave several interesting interventions during this seminar.

This weekend, the Malta Judo Federation is organising its National Championships at the Bocci Drome at the Cottonera Sports Complex. The event will start off with a festival for the young judoka, starting from the age of 4. This will be the first competition this year for the Maltese Judoka, who are currently also preparing for the 30th edition of the Malta International Judo Open which will be held on the 15th and 16th of March. As preparation for the Malta Open, Maestro Alfredo Monti,m 7th Dan and ex Coach of the Female National Italian Team, will hold a training camp for the National Team and the Maltese coaches.

In the coming weeks, some members of the cadet national team, Gabriel Debono (-60kgs), Cormack Spiteri (-66kgs), Alessio Muscat (-73kgs) and Francesco Aufieri (-81kgs) will be travelling to Udine to compete in the 29th Trofeo Internazionale Alpe Adria.

Alex Bezzina ta diversi interventi interessanti waqt dan is-seminar.
