Wednesday proved a quieter day for Team Malta in Glasgow, with competition across Athletics and Lawn Bowls.
In the 200m, Claire Azzopardi recorded 24.16s (+1.4 m/s) to place 23rd among 35 finishers, just off her season’s PB of 24.01s. Alongside her 100m performance two days ago, the result reflects the high standard she has maintained throughout the season and offers further encouragement as she builds towards future major championships.
Graham Pellegrini also competed in the 200m, clocking 21.20s (+2.4 m/s) to finish 31st out of 59 finishers. Although the performance cannot be recognised as an official seasonal best due to the wind reading exceeding the allowable limit of +2.0 m/s, it represents his fastest performance of the season under all conditions and points towards a strong return to top-level competition following a below-par 2025 season.
In Lawn Bowls, Shaun Parnis and Troy Lorimer faced Wales’ Ross Owen and Daniel Salmon. As in their previous match, Malta dropped a 5 on the first end and, despite playing well, the Welsh pair kept them at bay to take the first set 8-3.
Malta showed real grit in the second set, winning 4-3 to force a tie-break. Taking the mat, Lorimer delivered three excellent bowls around the jack, placing two behind in key positions. The Welsh pair couldn’t match them, and Malta took the tie-break to claim their first win from two matches.
Team Malta’s commitments continue on Thursday with Athletics and Lawn Bowls.
Connie Rixon opens her Women’s Singles campaign in the morning against the Falkland Islands’ Daphne Arthur-Almond, before returning in the afternoon to face Australia’s Ellen Fife. The Men’s Pairs of Shaun Parnis and Troy Lorimer also play in the morning against Jersey.
In Athletics, Gina McNamara competes in the second heat of the Women’s 1 Mile. The event replaces the 1,500m, which does not feature on the Glasgow programme, making the mile the only middle-distance event between the 800m and the 5,000m. In the evening, Jared Micallef contests the 800m semi-finals, having qualified earlier in the week.
