Gordon Asciak (Tennis)

Gordon Asciak started playing tennis at the age of 9 years. From the age of ten Gordon took part in numerous junior tournaments in the UK and won many prestigious tournaments. The results gave him the right to represent Malta at Junior Wimbledon in 1979. Gordon has been Malta Champion from 1978 till 1991, a record of 13 consecutive years.

He represented Malta in three editions of the European Junior Championships held in Czechoslavakia, Sweden and France beating junior champions from Greece, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia, Holland and Belgium. In year 1981 Gordon was awarded a scholarship at San Diego State University and after 2 years he decided to play full time tennis.

From year 1984 till 1998 he played in the German league with TC Hof and won a number of 104 matches from a total of 112 matches. During those 14 years, Gordon was twice voted as the best doubles player in the Upper Bavarian Region. He represented Malta in the Dais Cup, winning 17 singles matches and 20 doubles matches. The Malta Davis Cup team won twice promotion in year 1995 and year 1999 respectively.

It is important to note that together with his son Matthew Asciak, he was the first father and son to ever play a Davis Cup match in year 1999. In the Small Nations Games Gordon won the Gold Medal in Malta in year 1993, the silver medal in year 1995 at Luxembourg, the Bronze Medal in Liechtenstein in year 1999 and Bronze Medal in year 2001 at San Marino.

Beside all the above Gordon represented Malta in the European Seniors Championships where he beat some top tennis Nations like Bulgaria and Norway.

In year 2002 he decided to stop playing competitively and opened the first tennis academy in Malta, known as ‘The Gordon Asciak Tennis Academy’. During a period of over 17 years he has coached and produced most of Malta’s top players including his son Matthew. The latter managed to achieve the number 4 ranking in Europe for the U14 category. The Gordon Asciak Tennis Academy today caters for over 350 junior players. In year 2010 he opened the first two indoor tennis courts in Malta.

In year 2019 he was instrumental in bringing to Malta the Ten Pro Global Junior tour which attracted over 200 players, making it one of the biggest tennis events ever held in Malta.

Today Gordon runs the tennis academy and oversees the training of our top juniors. Gordon has the British LTA Level 2 of coaching and the ITF Level 2 of coaching.

Imwieled fit-12 ta’ Jannar 1964, Gerald DeGaetano kien biss erbat ijiem ‘l bogħod minn egħluq l-54 sena.

Bejn is-snin ’80 u ’90 iddomina l-atletika lokali fuq id-distanzi tal-5,000 metru u l-10,000 metru. Ħa sehem fi tliet edizzjonijiet tal-Logħob tal-Istati Żgħar tal-Ewropa fl-1987 f’Monaco, fl-1989 f’Ċipru fejn rebaħ il-medalja tal-bronż fl-10,000 metru f’ 31 minuta 21.04 sekondi biex kiser ir-record nazzjonali u sar l-ewwel rebbieħ ta’ medalja fl-atletika . DeGaetano kiseb il-medalja tal-fidda fuq l-istess distanza fl-edizzjoni tal-1991 f’Andorra fejn għamel l-10,000 metru f’31 minuta 47.91 sekondi


F’Ġunju tal-1991 irrappreżenta wkoll lil Malta fil-Logħob tal-Mediterran f’Ateni u fit-30 t’Awwissu 1991 fil-Kampjonati tad-Dinja IAAF, fl-Istadium Olimpiku ta’ Tokyo kien għamel rekords nazzjonali fuq il-5,000 metru fi 15 il-minuta 31.08 sekondi u fl-10,000 metru f’31 minuta 3.21 sekondi.


Għal bosta snin ħa sehem fin-nofs maratona ta’ Malta fejn fi Frar 1990 għamel id-distanza f’1 siegħa 7 minuti 19 il-sekonda li għadu record sa llum kif wkoll rebaħ darbtejn it-tellieqa Mdina 2 Spinola fl-1987 f’54 minuta 33 sekonda u daħal wkoll l-ewwel fl-1990.

Mis-sena 2000 beda jipprattika l-isport tal-Kayak tant li fl-2003 ħa sehem fil-Kampjonati tad-Dinja Flatwater Sprint f’ Gainsville fi Georgia, fl-Istati Uniti fid-distanzi ta’ 500 metru u 1000 metru. 


Fl-2014 kien parti mill-Kummissjoni tal-Atleti fi ħdan il-Kumitat Olimpiku Malti.

Since the start of weightlifting in Malta back in 1975, Alfred Ellul Mercer along with Charles Mifsud, was fundamental in developing the sport of weightlifting in Malta.

Over a span of 45 years Alfred Ellul Mercer served in various positions on the Malta Weightlifting committee, from Treasurer to General Secretary and then on to President. He was instrumental in the organization of high international competitions like Commonwealth Championships and European Championships.

He is also a certified International Category 1 referee where he refereed and judged high level competitions both locally and abroad.

After the sudden loss of the founder Charles Mifsud, he took over the helm of the association for the position of President. It was not an easy decision to take as it was a great responsibility to continue with the flourishing of the sport of weightlifting in Malta. He did this with great responsibility and dedication. 

In 2010 the Malta weightlifting executive committee and their members honoured him with the position of Honorary President of the Malta Weightlifting Association. His exceptional contribution still flourishes today and is still progressing and continuing to bring success to this sport.

In line with all this he has been a member of the Federazzjoni Maltija Lotta since 1975. He occupied various positions and was involved in organizing many International Competitions. He is still involved in Wrestling and is presently occupying the role of Treasurer.

John Zammit imwieled fil-5 ta’ Frar 1948, huwa l-president attwali tal-Federazzjoni Maltija taċ-Ċikliżmu. Filfatt huwa għadu kif reġa ġie elett bħala President waqt il-Laqgħa Annwali Ġenerali li nżammet nhar l-Erbgħa 27 ta’ Novembru 2019.

Huwa wieħed minn dawk l-elementi li jaħdmu ħafna fl-isport Malti, partikolarment fil-qasam taċ-ċikliżmu. Matul il-karriera kompetittiva tiegħu, huwa mhux biss rrappreżenta lil Malta f’xi avvenimenti importanti barra l-pajjiż, iżda kellu wkoll karriera ta’ tliet snin mal-klabb Sqalli GS Lampolet ta’ Katanja. Madankollu, huwa wkoll marbut ħafna u ddedikat għal BMX Malta Association, li hu mhux biss il-president mill-fondazzjoni tiegħu, iżda wkoll huwa l-fundatur. Grazzi għall-inizjattiva tiegħu, Zammit irnexxielu jattira eluf ta’ żgħażagħ lejn l-isport matul is-snin.

Karriera sportiva: sa minn meta kien tifel żgħir, kien dejjem attirat għaċ-ċikliżmu u llum għadu l-isport favorit tiegħu – jew aħjar, l-uniku sport tiegħu. Huwa ġera għal Qormi CC, Floriana CC, GS Lampolet u t-tim Nazzjonali.

Karriera amministrattiva: Wara li rtira miċ-ċikliżmu kompetittiv, beda l-kowċing u mexxa t-tim nazzjonali ta’ Malta fil-Logħob tan-Nazzjonijiet Żgħar f’Andorra fl-1991.

Premjijiet: Matul il-karriera kompetittiva tiegħu, John rebaħ bosta unuri, fosthom diversi tazzi għat-tim Sqalli matul it-tliet snin tiegħu magħhom. L-akbar mumenti mat-tim Nazzjonali kienu l-Logħob tal-Mediterran fit-Tuneżija fl-1967 u l-avveniment preolimpiku f’Munich fl-1971.

John Zammit ilu membru twil tal-Federazzjoni taċ-Ċikliżmu, fejn irrappreżenta lil Libertas, u serva wkoll bħala viċi-president għal bosta snin. Huwa ġie elett president tal-Federazzjoni fl-2002 u jqis dak il-mument bħala l-quċċata tal-karriera amministrattiva tiegħi. Ħadem ħafna ukoll fuq it-Tour ta’ Malta, li huwa ko-fundatur.

Nhar il-Ħadd, 13 ta’ Marzu 2016 f’Vale do Lobo – Algarve fil-Portugall, John Zammit ingħata l-Premju tal-Mertu tal-UEC (Union Européenne de Cyclisme) waqt l-Assemblea Ġenerali Ordinarja tal-2016.

Nhar is-Sibt 25 ta’ Frar 2017, John Zammit meta rebaħ l-unur tat-People’s Choice Award waqt l-Konkors tal-Għażliet Sportivi Nazzjonali 2016.

Nhar il-Ġimgħa, 27 ta’ Settembru 2019 f’Harrogate, Yorkshire, John Zammit ingħata l-għola unur internazzjonali dak tal-Premju tal-Mertu tal-UCI (Union Cycliste Internationale) waqt il-188 Kungress tal-UCI.

B’hekk huwa l-uniku membru fil-qasam ċiklistiku mondjali li rebaħ dawn iż-żewġ rikonoxximenti prestiġjużi.
