The Malta Judo Federation has started 2018 with a new concept: a Shiai tour concentrating on the 8 fundamentals of Judo.

The Shiai held last weekend was called the Caruana Cup. Joseph Caruana, also known as iz-Zuzu, is the founder of Maltese Judo. In the 1960s, the English servicemen used to practice Martial Arts including Judo, Karate and Jujitsu. Occasionally, they allowed civilians to join them in training. One of these civilians was iz-Zuzu. In 1969, a steering committee was created at the Zabbar Phyical Cultural Club, under the Presidency of Tony Caruana. Regular classes of Judo and demonstrations to propagate the sport started. In 1971, another 3 clubs were opened by Envic Galea and Tony Tanti and the Malta Judo Federation was recognised by the Maltese Olympic Committee and affiliated to the International Judo Federation and the European Judo Union. So, it is thanks to Joseph Caruana, that the Malta Judo Federation is one of the most active and successful federations on the island of Malta.

Last weekend, the 37 young dragons came together on the tatami from 6 clubs. These dragons range from the age of 4 to the age of 11. They were divided in age categories, and had the opportunity to learn skills, play games and do randoris (friendly matches). All activities held during the 2 hour session are based on basic coordination skills, discipline, fun and RESPECT, which was the fundamental of Judo highlighted yesterday. At the end of the event, iz-Zuzu was introduced to the dragons, and he awarded each and every kid the certificate of the event.

The day went on with 3 hours of Shiai amongst the Espoir (12 – 14 years), Cadets (15 – 17 years), and Juniors / Seniors. A shiai, by definition, is a judo contest, and the federation opts to have these contests throughout the year, as to prepare her athletes for the local and international competitions. In fact, the categories are joined together responsibly, so that the Judoka can meet different opponents than they usually do, and have the opportunity to try out new techniques and strategies on the same stage as a competition.

The 2 students from the National Sports School were asked about Respect. Estelle Camilleri (13), said that in the art of Judo, we learn how to respect the opponents, by bowing before and after each randori, so one can thank the opponent for training with you and also for giving you the opportunity to learn. Judo is not a violent Martial Art. There are rules to follow which safeguard safety. Clive Camilleri (15), said in Judo respect is important, as when you compete, whether you win or lose, you always show respect to your opponent, by bowing to them, shake hands, and walk off the tatami with your head held high. In training, the athletes bow to the Sensei (instructor) as a sign of respect.

Judo is a sport with no age parameters. Anyone can enjoy the benefits of Judo. For more information how to join the classes, check out the website www.maltajudo.com  or contact the Federation on info@maltajudo.com

Caruana Judo Cup: “”Il-bowing hija espressjoni ta’gratitudni u rispett.”

Il-Federazzjoni Maltija tal-Judo bdiet l-2018 b’kunċett ġdid: tour ta’ Shiai li jikkonċentra fuq it-8 prinċipji fundamentali tal-Judo.Ix-Shiai li kien miżmum l-aħħar weekend kien jissejjaħ it-Tazza Caruana. Joseph Caruana, magħruf ukoll bħala iż-Żużu, huwa l-fundatur tal-Judo Malti. Fis-sittinijiet, l-uffiċċjali Ingliżi kienu jipprattikaw l-Arti Martjali inkluż il-Judo, Karate u Jujitsu. Kultant, huma kienu jippermettu lil persuni ċivili biex jingħaqdu magħhom fit-taħriġ. Wieħed minn dawn iċ-ċivili kien iż-Żużu. Fl-1969, inħoloq kumitat ta’ tmexxija fil-Kazin Kulturali Fiżiku ta’ Ħaż-Żabbar, taħt il-Presidenza ta’ Tony Caruana. Inbdew klassijiet regolari tal-Judo, kif ukoll dimostrazzjonijiet biex jitkabbar l-isport. Fl-1971 inbdew 3 klabbs oħra minn Envic Galea u Tony Tanti u l-Federazzjoni Maltija tal-Judo ġiet rikonoxxuta mill-Kumitat Olimpiku Malti u ġiet affiljata mal-Federazzjoni Internazzjonali tal-Judo u l-Unjoni Ewropea tal-Judo. Għalhekk, grazzi għal Joseph Caruana, il-Federazzjoni Maltija tal-Judo hija waħda mill-aktar federazzjonijiet attivi u ta’ suċċess fil-gżira ta ‘Malta.

Il-weekend li għadda, is-37 draguni ċkejknin li telgħu fuq it-tatami ġew minn 6 klabbs. Dawn id-draguni jvarjaw mill-età ta’ 4 sa l-età ta’ 11-il sena. Huma kienu maqsuma f’kategoriji ta’ età, u kellhom l-opportunità li jitgħallmu ħiliet, jilagħbu logħob u jagħmlu randoris (logħbiet ta’ ħbiberija). L-attivitajiet kollha li saru matul is-sessjoni ta’ sagħtejn huma bbażati fuq ħiliet bażiċi ta’ koordinazzjoni, dixxiplina, gost u RISPETT, li kien il-valur fundamentali tal-Judo enfasizzat il-bieraħ. Fl-aħħar tal-avveniment, iż-Żuzu ġie introdott lid-Draguni, u ta ċertifikat tal-avveniment lil kull tifel u tifla.

Il-ġurnata kompliet bi 3 sigħat ta’ Shiai fost l-Espoir (12-14-il sena), Kadetti (15-17 sena), u Juniors / Seniors. Ix-Shiai, bħala definizzjoni, huwa konkors tal-Judo. Il-federazzjoni tagħżel li jkollha dawn il-konkorsi matul is-sena, biex tipprepara lill-atleti tagħha għall-kompetizzjonijiet lokali u internazzjonali. Fil-fatt, il-kategoriji huma magħquda flimkien b’mod responsabbli u sensibbli, sabiex il-Judoka jkunu jistgħu jiltaqgħu ma’ avversarji differenti milli normalment jagħmlu, u jkollhom l-opportunità li jippruvaw tekniki u strateġiji ġodda fuq palk simil għal dak tal-kompetizzjoni.

It-2 studenti mill-Iskola Nazzjonali tal-Isport ġew mistoqsija dwar ir-rispett. Estelle Camilleri (13), qalet li fl-arti tal-Judo, nitgħallmu kif tirrispetta l-avversarji, billi qabel u wara kull randori il-Judka ibaxxi rasu b’sinjal ta’ rispett, u b’hekk wieħed jista’ jirringrazzja lill-avversarju talli tħarreġ miegħek u wkoll li tak l-opportunità li titgħallem. Judo mhuwiex Arti Marzjali vjolenti. Hemm regoli li għandhom jiġu segwiti biex tissalvagwardja is-sigurtà. Clive Camilleri (15), qal li fil-Judo, ir-rispett huwa importanti, bħal meta tikkompeti, jekk tirbaħ jew titlef, int għandek dejjem turi rispett għall-avversarju tiegħek, billi tbaxxi rasek b’rispett u tieħu b’idejn l’avversarju. Fit-taħriġ, l-atleti wkoll jbaxxu rashom b’rispett lejn is-Sensei (għalliem) bħala sinjal ta ‘rispett.

Judo huwa sport mingħajr parametri tal-età. Kulħadd jista ‘jgawdi l-benefiċċji ta’ Judo. Għal aktar informazzjoni dwar kif tista tipprova l-arti u l-isport tal-Judo, ara l-websajt www.maltajudo.com  jew ikkuntattja lil Federazzjoni fuq info@maltajudo.com.
