Following the set up of the Maltese Olympic Committee in 1928, things had to move very fast. Malta did make it to the Amsterdam Olympiad and was represented by its waterpolo team.
The best position a Maltese Athlete has ever achieved was in Shooting (Double Trap) – an event which has unfortunately now been removed from the Olympic programme. Our best result to-date was achieved in the Beijing Summer Olympics in 2008, when William Chetcuti finished joint 6th place, but ended in the 8th position after the shoot-off. In the 2004 Olympics in Athens, William Chetcuti has also finished joint 6th place eventually finishing 9th after the shoot-off. This same 9th placing was also obtained by Peter Bonello, in Sailing (Windsurfing) in the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
William Chetcuti was the only athlete to-date to win a Qualifying Place to any Olympics, although we have also had some athletes achieving ‘B’ qualifying times. Chetcuti has registered the most appearances for Malta in the Olympic Games so far, with participation in 2004, 2008, 2012 and 2016
The list of Maltese Olympians, as at 21st January, 2018 was compiled by Sports Journalist Mr. Charles Camenzuli.
