
The Malta Invitational Games kicked off with a good start yesterday when Maltese Taekwondo athletes and bowlers gave a good account of themselves on the first day of the Invitational Games.
In Taekwondo, Michela Scerri triumphed in a great victory winning a Gold medal, whilst Alycia Cassar, Nathan Degiorgio and Samuel Vella obtained a silver medal after hard-earned fights. Luke Chircop also fought amazingly well and won bronze in his category.
A number of exhibition matches were held for the younger athletes, with Jean Schembri winning his competition against the Faroe Islands. Noah Kitcher and the youngest athlete 6-year-old Dwayne Micallef also won their fights. Female athlete Areti-Christina Chamaleli won her exhibition fight against Mirian Poulson from the Faroe Islands.
Maltese bowlers, competing in the Singles event also had a great start with two gold and one Bronze medal. After 6 games of play, Dennis Mercieca won gold from the males (by just 3 pins) while Cynthia Frendo Duca won gold from the females. Tiziana Carannante won bronze for Team Malta (by just 9 pins over 4th place).
Competitions continue today. Taekwondo continues their competitions from 1100hrs at the Qawra Palace Hotel, whilst triathletes will enter into action at 1030 in Hal Far where a sprint duathlon will take place. Bowlers will return to competition on Saturday at 1915hrs.
