Monday proved a landmark day for Team Malta at the XX Mediterranean Games. Andrea Mifsud delivered the finest result in Maltese cycling history, Sam Cassar showed fighting spirit to come from behind on the badminton court, and Stefan Farrugia took another win in Raffa.
Cycling
Andrea Mifsud put in a magnificent effort in today’s Road Race, crossing the line in 3:01:26 to finish 5th overall, taking on a final sprint edging the other four riders with whom he was chasing the lead group.
The race was tactically demanding with the field splitting into several groups early on. Mifsud rode smartly, staying in the chase pack and doing everything he could to close the gap on the lead group — a strong trio of Tommaso Dati, Tiago Gomes Antunes and Federico Iaomoni who ultimately took the medals home.
Behind the scenes, the team effort was everything. Bernard Galea was there from the start, supporting Mifsud in the first half of the race while Aidan Buttigieg took charge in the second half, supporting him right through to the final climb.
Today’s result was the best ever achieved by Maltese cyclists in games of this calibre and speaks volumes on the preparation and abilities of the Maltese team.
Badminton
It was a nail biting game for Sam Cassar who came from behind to defeat Cyprus’s Nikolaos Kokosis in three sets. Kokosis took the opening set 21-18, but Cassar responded with a composed, tactical performance to level the match 21-19 before closing it out 21-13 in the decider. Following today’s result, Cassar will face Italy’s Giovanni Toti on Tuesday morning.
Martina Clark’s women’s singles campaign came to an end this morning in the Round of 32, going down 21-4, 21-9 to Greece’s Georgia Sotiriou at the Francavilla Sport Hall. A tough draw against strong opposition, but valuable experience for Clark at her first Mediterranean Games appearance.
Francesca Clark put in a spirited performance, but ultimately fell to Italy’s Gianna Stiglich Guzman in a straight-sets defeat. Stiglich Guzman proved too strong on the day, taking the first set 21-11 before closing out the match 21-8 in the second. Despite the 2-0 scoreline, Clark competed with determination and composure right through to the final shuttle.
The Clark siblings will compete in the ladies’ doubles against Greece on Thursday.
Raffa
Stefan Farrugia produced a composed performance to defeat Algeria’s Houssam Eddine Hamel, taking the match 1–0 across four ends.
Farrugia showed patience and precision through each additional end, eventually claiming the points to seal a hard-fought victory.
It caps a testing campaign for the Maltese player, who suffered a defeat to San Marinese World Champion Jacopo Frisoni the previous day — a result that proved well-founded as Frisoni has since advanced all the way to the gold medal final.
Tuesday’s Programme
Tuesday’s programme opens with Sam Cassar facing Giovanni Toti (ITA) in badminton men’s singles. Trap shooters Gianluca Chetcuti and William Chetcuti will then take to the range for qualification day one, while in the afternoon, tennis players Alex Degabriele and Liam Delicata step onto court for the men’s singles. Delicata meets Jasin Jakupi (KOS), while Degabriele faces Wissam Abderrahman (TUN).
