The Maltese Olympic Committee recently hosted a Level 1 Strength and Conditioning Course, accredited by the Australian Strength and Conditioning Association (ASCA).

The ASCA-accredited course is recognised worldwide and provides certification based on the knowledge on how to design, apply and review training programs to improve athletic performance.

The course was run by International Strength and Conditioning Coach Mike McGurn who has worked with a wide selection of successful top level athletes.  Twenty coaches attended the two day, hands-on course held at the Maltese Olympic Committee Headquarters at Tal-Qroqq.

“This course was the first step towards developing a skilled pool of coaches who are recognizing the importance of strength and conditioning in their athletes’ training programmes” explained Nigel McCarthy, Director and Technical Commission member at the MOC.  “

This was the first time such a course was hosted in Malta.  This course was part of the Maltese Olympic Committee’s efforts to build a more professional and qualified sporting community.

Course participants now will be required to undergo supervised training and coaching as well as clock several hours in order to obtain their Level 1 certification.

“The success of this course and the interest it has generated, has not only brought this facet of athlete preparation to the fore but has encouraged us to look at other training opportunities in the near future” McCarthy concluded.

The hosting of the Level 1 Strength and Conditioning course was made possible through the support of Olympic Solidarity funding.
