The Maltese Olympic Committee announced the names of over 130 beneficiaries, representing nineteen disciplines,  of the Youth Development programme.

The beneficiary selection took place following a call to registered Assocations and Federations to nominate their athletes.

The criteria for selection was based on athletes’ current sporting CV, international performance and results, coaches’ reference and an interview with each athlete.   In depth discussions were undertaken by the MOC Technical Commission and the respective coaches, bearing mind the importance of the athletes’ trajectory considering their age and the developmental stage they are at.

Athletes forming part of the Youth Development Scheme will not only benefit from financial assistance but will have access to professional assistance on nutrition, strength and conditioning, sports psychologist and online education as well as access to the MOC’s Functional Diagnostic Laboratory.

“The Youth Development programme was designed to enhance the protection and well-being of young elite athletes both on the field of play and in their everyday lives” explained Johanna Grech, Youth Director, Maltese Olympic Committee.

The programme, she continued to explain, include a series of educational activities aimed towardspromoting clean sport whilst working on performance.

“These are the next generation of Maltese athletes, they have the potential to become Malta’s top athletes and it is our responsibility to assist their growth as much as possible.  The selection process was a long but thorough process to ensure fairness all around” concluded Charlene Attard,  Director of Sport.
